Undrafted free agents invited to Seattle Seahawks NFL Rookie Minicamp who could potentially sign with the team
USA TODAY Sports

NFL rookie minicamps are kicking off this weekend! The Seattle Seahawks are one of the first NFL teams kicking off their rookie minicamp this weekend May 3-5. All of the draft picks and top-dollar guaranteed contract undrafted free agent signings will get most of the attention, but general manager John Schneider also invited some intriguing undrafted free agents who will attend the rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.

This rookie minicamp is effectively be one of the last shots for these undrafted invites to make a strong impression and earn an NFL contract. If they're unsigned at this point, an NFL future is certainly a long shot, but for the chosen few who do get signed after minicamps it provides a hopeful beginning for their professional football journey. Let's dive into some of the top undrafted free agents who might just earn their first NFL contract this weekend at Seahawks rookie minicamp!

Taulia Tagovailoa, QB Maryland

Last fall Taulia Tagovailoa--the younger brother of Tua--set the all-time Big Ten passing yards record with 11,356 yards through the air! And while Maryland didn't always stack the roster around him in a way that was conducive to winning a ton of football games, Taulia often put the team on his back and impressed anyway.

The Seahawks have a fine starting quarterback in Geno Smith for the next couple years, but they could certainly be looking at other future options already. Taulia is a long shot now, but he can make some incredible throws. He'll have to likely beat out Chevan Cordeiro (a fellow UDFA from San Jose State) for a practice squad spot this fall if the Seahawks do sign him, but that's certainly a possibility.

Dakereon Joyner, RB/WR South Carolina

Dakereon Joyner has played quarterback, running back, wide receiver, and returned kickoffs on special teams throughout his college career. He's a freak athlete who can simply do it all. He's made it clear throughout his years at South Carolina and the draft process that he doesn't care how he gets on the field. He just wants to play.

His most likely path to a roster spot would initially be via kickoff or punt return role, but he could also most definitely slot in at receiver or running back early if they have any injuries. His versatility is unmatched in this class.

Sam Lockett, DB Washington State

Sam Lockett has played over 1500 snaps in the last two seasons for Washington State at safety. In that span he's only allowed only one touchdown while in coverage (according to PFF). He can play close to the line when called upon, and is one of the most underrated defenders in this class when it comes to understanding and executing his particular assignment within the defense, even if he's not particularly flashy. The Seahawks could use an extra defensive back who could plug in at safety in big nickel packages like Lockett.
